The universe continues to have it's way with me...assuring me that this is indeed the best choice I've made, maybe ever. The kindness of the Guatemalan people was first revealed to me on the plane. I sat beside Jaime, a beautiful Guatemalan man who lives in LA. He offered to help find a bus to Antigua. All I can say is Thank the Lard! It was chaos as soon as we stepped outside, taxi and bus drivers fighting for the tourists. Somehow they all knew I wasn't from here. Must be because I am so tall...no joke! Anyhow we found Jaime's brother and he offered to drive me to Antigua. His wife and four yr old son were adorable and I got to practice my shitty espanol. To top it off he would not allow me to pay for the ride. Absolutely refused. "Welcome to Guatemala", he says with a huge grin and I am overcome with gratitude.
They dropped me off at Parque Central and within 3 minutes of setting my bag down I am approached by 2 Belgian women who are flyering for their new rooftop bar atop a hostel. I read this as fate and followed them to the hostel, but not before we were accosted by Christian missionaries who were concerned that the two girls would turn to prostitution because of the bar. I was only slightly offended that they weren't concerned for me. We basically told them to piss off and I knew I had found my people.
